Binary opposition in country house

Image
Binary Opposition in Country House by Blur: The most obvious use of binary opposition is shown in the video for Country House as they are either living in the city or the countryside. The first establishing shot we see is a block of flats in the city and the next shot goes to inside a flat where the curtains are abruptly closed. This signifies both isolation and entrapment, suggesting the city is not all it is made out to be. Additionally, the colour of the second and third pictures are very desaturated, again linking in with the idea that the City is not the place to live. The visuals of the video also give great effect on the binary opposition. The symbolic code of the rat is used throughout the video. A rat is shown in a close up at 0.22. This is to represent the exhausting and repetitive lifestyle that the businessman lives. There are three distinctive settings: the working class flat shown through edited medium and long shots, the studio setting with the giant mousetrap style

Focus Group

Image
1. Do you enjoy listening to Britpop music? 2. What do you particularly like about the music? 3. What are your opinions on the song 'Wonderwall'? 4. If you've seen the music video for Wonderwall, what do you like about it? 5. What do you think is key in order to replicate a successful Britpop music video? 6. Do you think there should be a narrative story throughout the music video?   During our meeting, we decided that it would be a good idea to form a focus group so we can ask our target audience personally what they think of our song choice and what we can include on order to make it more appealing and create a professional look. From this focus group, we found out that they en=joy the song and they highlighted to us that it is important for us to include and consider timing of when the video was set so that we don't 'modernise' it. As a result of the video we have decided to use both a narrative and live performance in our video, so that we can

Parental Advisory Label

The  Parental Advisory  label  is a warning label first introduced by the   Recording Industry Association of America  (RIAA) in 1985 and later adopted by the  British Phonographic Industry  (BPI) in 2011. It is placed on audio recordings in recognition of excessive profanities or inappropriate references, with the intention of alerting parents of potentially unsuitable material for younger children. After deciding our chosen song it meant that we had to produce research into provisional aadvisory warnings. I have analysed the lyrics the lyrics our song '400 lux' and have found that there is no explicit language featuring in the song so we do not have t provide the label in production of the music video and digipak.

Artist name research

Image
The name of an artist is a big part of their overall success; if they are called a name which is relevant and current to their target audience then their success is much more likely to occur. In order to come up with a name for our artist, we have to look closely at existing and also past Britpop music artists, particularly Male bands, in order to come up with a good name for our group. They originated as ‘The Rain’ then Noel told Liam to let him join the band. Noel was a roadie for Inspiral Carpets and they had a gig at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon.  Brother Liam, who had come along to the gig, was taken with the name "Oasis", and he suggested to Noel that it would make a good name for them to set up their own band, which at the time was called The Rain.

Birtipop fashion and style

Image
Kangol Bucket Hats: This particular style of hat became popular during the late 80's 'Madchester' era. They were specifically worn by Artists such as: Elton John, LL Cool J and the Gallagher brothers. Thanks to Oasis and The Stone Roses it stuck around as a Britpop staple. In 2016, the millinery still remains the perfect accessory for any festival fanatic. We can use this style of Fashion within our Music video to recreate one of the biggest fashion statements during the Britpop era. It will also show our knowledge on the fashion of the genre but also the fact that many Artists wear these styles of clothing during their Music videos. Many fishermen used to wear Bucket hats to protect from the rain whilst fishing. Many fans of the Britpop genre started to wear these in Manchester, to protect them from the rain during festivals and concerts. From there on, it has spiraled into a huge fashion statement of that era. Parka Jackets: The Parka jacket was first popularised

Representation of Liam Gallagher

Image
In the 1990's Liam was considered the king of rock n roll with his brother Noel, they were represented as very stylish individuals who were known for their extravagant outfits and constant arguments with each other. represented as the more childish Artist out of the two. This was because he was always getting in trouble within the media for something he had said or done. However, it is undeniable that the music that they produced is defined as some of the best to come from the UK. Oasis came to fame around 1991. At this time Liam was only 19 years of age, which is quiet a young age to gain such huge media publicity. The whole of Liam Gallagher's singing career he has been represented negatively, this could be due to many people being jealous of his swagger and different style or the media purposely trying to make money by creating false accusations. He is portrayed as a very eccentric character, especially within the media-eye, this could be due down to his lack of filter on t

Wonderwall Lyrics Analysis

Image
The Lyrics of the song ultimately signify that it is a love song. There are many words, which are repetitively used which therefore create this idea. Words such as ‘You’re’, ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘my’ suggest a sense of belonging. Also, use of the word 'heart' is another reference to love. The overuse of these different words creates a link to romance. It also integrates the use of Barthes’ code. We know this as enigma is created through the different clues which are given within the song. Within Wonderwall the message portrayed is that Noel Gallagher is in love with someone but has not shown his passion for her yet. We can suggest that the semantic code is used at 1:37 as there is an additional space next to Noel on the row of seats. We can imply as an audience that the additional meaning is his hope for the girl to come and fill the seat next to him. Moreover, we can suggest that the symbolic code is the use of the mirror as it could be used as a symbol in hope that the girl w

oasis representation

Image
Oasis are represented very positively across numerous Media boards. However, both Noel and Liam Gallagher are disliked by many people within the music industry. This is due to the fact that they are can be very arrogant and also many people are jealous of the fact that they have dominated the music industry for many years. Their audience however adore both Noel and Liam for their swagger and style, it is evident to see why as they are both unique and different in their own ways.  The Audience of the Britpop genre are a range from 20-40 year old, mainly male individuals. They wear many clothes such as bright clothing and trainers. They are mostly from the lower class and have normal jobs such as: Builders, engineers and tradesmen. The reception theory suggests that producers construct a text encoded with hidden meaning that the producers want to convey across to the audience. The genre conveys usually messages through drinking and drugs this may be something that the audience can r

Target Audience Identification

Image
The target audience of Britpop is highly varied from people in their teenage years 16- early 20's and then people who were born during the birth of Britpop music (35-45 year old). Britpop music is such a highly varied age group that it is hard to identify as there has been a revival of the music during the last decade where many people have started to listen to it again. This is mainly due to The Stone Roses tour and also Liam Gallagher's new tour and album, with more music coming from Noel Gallagher in the foreseeable future. Within Britpop music there is no specific Gender that the music is aimed at but the predominant sex which listen to their style of music is males, this is ultimately down to the fact that all the bands that are featured in the industry are all males. However, there are many females who listen to this type of music as it is very calming and relaxing. The main Ethnicity which Britpop is aimed at is evidently British. However mainly people from all over

Full Analysis of Wonderwall music video

Image
This is a performance based video. This is clear because all the band members are a part of this video and there are some close ups of the artists, however, there is no audience involved in this video. The video begins with a shot of a pretty empty room, the room is in black and white and this immediately creates a relaxed and serene tone. Throughout the video different iconography is used, for example; guitars, drums etc. these particular props are often associated with this genre. They commonly appear within indie music videos and are therefore stereotypically anchored to this type of music and the type of people that make this type of music. The close ups are used as according to Andrew Goodwin's theory, the label record demand close ups. The camerawork is very simple and doesn't use any fancy camera shots or angles and this is because of the fact it links into the simple narrative of the video. There is an interesting use of a vinyl record player th

Oasis Artist Analysis

Image
Throughout the duration of Oasis’ activity within the music industry many branding strategies were used in order to appeal and relate to the target audience, ultimately contributing to the success of the band. When constructing the branding and image of Oasis many factors were to be taken into consideration to create an impact to engage with the target audience. These factors would include the way in which the bands core values were reflected in the name of the band, the logo and promotional photographs. After  initially identifying Oasis’ target audience as 18 to 40 year old Englishmen the next step was to maximize the engagement from the preferred reading, in order for them to remain loyal and increase the number of consumers of which fell into the target audience category. They also created a new image to Britpop, such as the 'bad-boy' and very serious front. Their new contrast to the the strereotypical Britpop view helped them to become one of the greatest bands in both

Roland Barthes- codes

Image
The Hermeneutic Code:  Refers to any element of the story that is not fully explained and hence creates a mystery. We are going to use the Hermeneutic code within our music video to keep the audience engaged. In order to do this we will save the most revealing clips till the end.  The Proairetic Code - This code builds up tension and refers to any other action or event that indicates something else is going to happen, which gets the reader guessing as to what will happen next. The  Hermeneutic  and  Proairetic  Codes work as a pair to develop the story's tensions and keep the reader interested Within our music video we will try to incorporate this so the audience are kept guessing as to what is going to happen and the build up of tension will hopefully help create this effect. Semantic Code - This code refers to connotations within the video which give an additional meaning over the basic denotative meaning of the word. In our final music video we will try to highl

British Popmusic

Image
Britpop is a type of British Pop Music of the mid 1990's, that was typically influenced by the Beatles and many more artists. America were trending in the music industry with a genre named 'Alternative Rock'. This was similar to Britpop, meaning there was a lot of competition and rivalry within the charts. Oasis- They are an English Rock band formed in 1991. The band originally consisted of Liam and Noel Gllagher, Tony McCarroll and Paul Arthur. Oasis have had eight UK number-one singles and eight UK numbeer one-albums, and won fifteen NME Awards, nine Q awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit awards. Though Britpop is seen retrospectively as a marketing tool, and more of a cultural moment than a musical style of genre, there are musical conventions and make influences the bands grouped under the Brit term have in common. By doing our research into Britpop and the industry we can see the stereotypes and different marketing tools which bands use in order

Survey Monkey

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/S362RRD This has been conducted in order to help us develop more ideas and also get an idea of what is appropriate to our audience and we can also gain more knowledge and creative ideas in order to make positive progress with our work. It has allowed us to find out what Artists and use of editing that our audience enjoys watching and therefore we will be able to reflect this in our work.

Genre conventions of a music video

Image
In my research I found that Many music videos are low budget with an urban back drop to the artist performing in the video. By using a simple back drop the audience as it associates them with the music. This is an element I know that we can simply achieve, as we live amongst a similar environment therefore it is easily accessible and also we can create the same view.  Genre conventions of a music video are the most important to use when creating and planning a music video as they can help us reach higher grades and make the video look more proffessional and visually pleasing to the audience. How do we recognise this genre? Performance elements- It is important that we can try and replicate this for our final music video as  a variety of successful bands use this technique to show the links between the Britpop genre, Many bands also include this element as it suggests that it will help to improve the quality of their videos. Low-key lighting- We need to u

Narrative Theory

Image
Levi Strauss - Strauss came up with the idea of binary opposition and this is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning and in structuralism, a binary opposition is seen as a fundamental organizer of human philosophy, culture and also language. Within, Noel Gallagher's song 'High Flying Birds' the woman in which is featured throughout starts in a very negative place and looks to be tortured by an evil person. However, the video quickly changes which also creates the illusion that she was drugged and then the shot quickly cuts to her in a much happier place. This shows the use of binary opposition as it shows someone in a negative place and then at the end of the video they are in a much better place. We can use Binary opposition within our music to show the differences between upper class and lower class or north and south. We can also gather data to see which bands people prefer. For example we can make a survey to see whether people enjoy list

SWOT Analysis

Image
Strength We listen to music in everyday life so therefore we know what we are looking for in a potentially good video and we are also very familiar with different styles and genres of music. It is rather easy to gather a target audience and ask other people of our age what they enjoy as we are in that age category. We are the Hollywood demographic of 15-24 year olds so therefore we know what to look out for. As individuals we are very unique, creative and listen to different types of music so when we come together as a collective is may come to our advantage and help us to decide on something. Due to our location, we have a massive range of different locations in which we can use when we do our filming. Weakness We unfortunately do not have someone who can sing for us at the moment however we are trying to contact a few up and coming singers to help us with our video and therefore they may be able to give us some advice when it co

conventions of music videos

Image
Codes and conventions are different things used within music videos to construct messages and meanings. These techniques can be divided into two types: technical and symbolic. Technical techniques show how the meaning is conveyed using technical equipment. This may include elements such as how the camera is used including types of angles and movements, different sound within the shot, whether its diegetic or non-diegetic or even fast or slow editing. Symbolic techniques are the ways of showing meaning beyond what is shown. It could be portrayed through the use of: mise-en-scene, facial expressions, body language and posture. It is very important to use codes and conventions within all music videos as it allows the audience to become familiar with particular genres. Sub-consciously they will eventually start to recognize the different types of conventions within the genre. It provides a structure to the video that the audience will understand and the video also compliments the lyr
