Narrative Theory
Levi Strauss - Strauss came up with the idea of binary opposition and this is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning and in structuralism, a binary opposition is seen as a fundamental organizer of human philosophy, culture and also language.
Within, Noel Gallagher's song 'High Flying Birds' the woman in which is featured throughout starts in a very negative place and looks to be tortured by an evil person. However, the video quickly changes which also creates the illusion that she was drugged and then the shot quickly cuts to her in a much happier place. This shows the use of binary opposition as it shows someone in a negative place and then at the end of the video they are in a much better place.
We can use Binary opposition within our music to show the differences between upper class and lower class or north and south. We can also gather data to see which bands people prefer. For example we can make a survey to see whether people enjoy listening to southern bands such as Blur and Elastica or Northern bands such as Oasis.
Todorov's narrative theory suggests that all narrative's follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when the equilibrium is then restored.
We can use Todorov's narrative theory research to create the idea that music videos also follow a three part structure. For example in our music video we could portray the idea that a couple are happily together, then have an argument over something then ultimately split and then at the end of the music video come back together where the equilibrium is restored.
In the music video 'Live Forever' by Oasis the music video starts of with them digging out a hole for their friend - this is where the equilibrium is disrupted and then at the end of the video he comes back to join the band and the equilibrium is restored.
It is highly important to be able to integrate Todorov's, Levis Strauss' and Barthes' theories into our music videos as they will help to create a fixed narrative and also inevitably make our music video much more developed. By including their theories into our work we can create structure and this will help us to give our music video a much more professional front.
