conventions of music videos
Codes and conventions are different things used within music videos to construct messages and meanings. These techniques can be divided into two types: technical and symbolic.
Technical techniques show how the meaning is conveyed using technical equipment. This may include elements such as how the camera is used including types of angles and movements, different sound within the shot, whether its diegetic or non-diegetic or even fast or slow editing. Symbolic techniques are the ways of showing meaning beyond what is shown. It could be portrayed through the use of: mise-en-scene, facial expressions, body language and posture.
It is very important to use codes and conventions within all music videos as it allows the audience to become familiar with particular genres. Sub-consciously they will eventually start to recognize the different types of conventions within the genre. It provides a structure to the video that the audience will understand and the video also compliments the lyrics.
Within the Stone Roses music video they use technical codes by using many different angles and shot types such as close-up, high angle, eye-level and canted shots. This is to create a unique video which will also make the video more interesting. We will try to include many different angles and shot types in our music video to create a professional look and also to help us reach much higher grades.
The most general codes and conventions within music videos include:
- The style (perofrmance, concept and narrative)
- The camera
Use many close-ups to show the main singer within the video, also use many long-shots in order to include all the members in the video to show that they are a band. High-key lighting used in videos to portray an upbeat mood. We will use many close-up shots in our music video in order to show the lead singer within our song, the close-ups will also be used to show when a cut-in is used but also to show detail within the video- for example: Faces of the singers, the background and also costumes.
- The editing techniques
Many cut shots are used within Britpop music videos in order to show the change of beat. Additionally, Visual effects are used to create visuals that you would not see in reality and achieve the WOW factor within the video. We will try to include many jump shots within our own personal; video to make it more exciting for the audience but also to show the change of the beat.
- The sound effects
Lip synicng is used within nearly all music videos due to the fact that their actual vocals are created in a studio and the music video is edited together with their voice to create the idea that they are singing. We are going to most likely use lip syncing in our video and then edit our own vocals on top of the song as the sound is much crispier and louder. If we didn't over lap the vocals over the visuals the sound would be very poor and quiet
-Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene of our music video will be done within an enclosed dark space just like many Britpop music videos. Unfortunately, we can't gain access to a green-screen which many companies use to enhance the quality of their videos. In the Stone Roses music video they use green-screens to try and incorporate the factor of disorientation and also bands like Oasis use enclosed spaces to film their music videos.
- Representations
Within the stone Roses music video the video connotes a factor of disorientation and has a very shallow focus. The video incorporates the factor of drugs as it is very blurred and the jump cuts are rather slow and steady. We will try to use this within our own music video by making it blurred and create the factor of disorientation. After speaking to our focus group, it has become very clear that drugs is a main feature of Britpop and this is a good way to focus in on this factor.
It is very important to understand conventions of a music video as it can help you with a variety of different techniques which can make our piece of work much better. Camera angles, environment and costumes can all be use to make our video more professional and help us reach them higher grades.
