Roland Barthes- codes

Image result for barthesThe Hermeneutic Code: Refers to any element of the story that is not fully explained and hence creates a mystery.

We are going to use the Hermeneutic code within our music video to keep the audience engaged. In order to do this we will save the most revealing clips till the end.

The Proairetic Code - This code builds up tension and refers to any other action or event that indicates something else is going to happen, which gets the reader guessing as to what will happen next. The Hermeneutic and Proairetic Codes work as a pair to develop the story's tensions and keep the reader interested

Within our music video we will try to incorporate this so the audience are kept guessing as to what is going to happen and the build up of tension will hopefully help create this effect.

Semantic Code - This code refers to connotations within the video which give an additional meaning over the basic denotative meaning of the word.

In our final music video we will try to highlight the differences and the given additional meanings to create a video with meaning and this will therefore help create a more professional look.

Symbolic Code - This code is used to create symbolism within a video and exercise opposites to show contrast and create a greater meaning, tension, drama and character development.

In our music video in order to create contrast we will have to make sure that the visuals of the video match the lyrics of the song but also at the same time create opposites in the video to show differences.

Cultural CodeCultural codes refer to a world outside of the narrative. It is where part of the video refers to something externally and assumes that the audience has knowledge on whatever it is they are referring to

Examples of Bathes’ code are portrayed in Oasis’ hit little by little. Firstly, Enigma is used as people will question why Noel is homeless and who the other man in the music video is and what he is doing. Action is created when the man is going on a walk and comes across Liam helping him through the crowd and a tough time, which then leads him out to a field fulfilled with freedom and happiness. Semantics is shown throughout the video as it suggests that Oasis are trying to say that the rich aren’t doing anything for the poor. We know that the audience are being able to see this message clearly as Noel is ignored.
