Full Analysis of Wonderwall music video
This is a performance based video. This is clear because all
the band members are a part of this video and there are some close ups of the
artists, however, there is no audience involved in this video. The video begins
with a shot of a pretty empty room, the room is in black and white and this
immediately creates a relaxed and serene tone. Throughout the video different
iconography is used, for example; guitars, drums etc. these particular props
are often associated with this genre. They commonly appear within indie
music videos and are therefore stereotypically anchored to this type of music
and the type of people that make this type of music.
The close ups are used as according to Andrew Goodwin's
theory, the label record demand close ups. The camerawork is very simple and
doesn't use any fancy camera shots or angles and this is because of the fact it
links into the simple narrative of the video. There is an interesting use of a
vinyl record player that allows the music to start anchoring it to the action
on screen. Certain representations are presented throughout this video, for
example there is a pretty strong influence of John Lennon's work, so when the
oasis lead singer appears on screen with the iconic glasses. This reference
represents the band as strongly influenced and respectful of past music
artists, there is also a clown appearing in the video, the clown suggests
several things, one interpretation could be the 'joker' idea that is associated
with clowns.
Additionally, linking into the simple narrative of the music
video, is the editing. The editing is mainly straight cuts with a few flashes.
The straight cuts is to make the video more realistic and the flashes are used
to make the video more interesting and it fits into the pace of the music beats.
The lighting in this video is light on the performer and then black around the
outside so all you can see them. The lighting throughout the video is very
low-key and creates the aspect of isolation which is also portrayed through the
Noel sat on his own.
Furthermore, the special effects which are used within this
video create a black and white contrast. Moreover, the flashing which is
created through the editing aspect of the music video helps keeps the pace of
the music very steady and easy to follow. In this video there is also motion of
looking which is also apart of Andrew Goodwin's theory.
